Donald Byrd

A formidable trumpeter and pioneer of jazz education, Donald Byrd began as a premier hard bop musician in the 1950s, recording prolifically for #Blue Note# and playing alongside giants like *John Coltrane* and *Art Blakey*. In the 1970s, he boldly transitioned into a new phase, collaborating with producers *Larry* and *Fonce Mizell* to create a string of commercially successful jazz-funk albums, including the landmark 'Black Byrd' and 'Places and Spaces'. This fusion, which became a cornerstone for sampling in hip-hop, cemented his legacy as an innovator. He also mentored and founded the influential funk group The Blackbyrds, comprised of his students from Howard University.
