Rushed into production to capitalize on their massive, MTV-fueled international breakthrough, the Liverpudlian group delivered a surprisingly dense and atmospheric sophomore record. 'Listen' expands upon their signature icy synthpop with heavily layered guitar effects, prominent electronic percussion, and surprisingly dark, sci-fi-infused lyrical themes. Despite producing the hit 'Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)', the album's moodier tone signaled an early commercial plateau for the flamboyant band.
