The Pirate's Gospel

The Pirate's Gospel cover art

Alela Diane's self-released debut (later reissued widely in 2006) captures an incredibly intimate, bare-bones acoustic folk aesthetic. Recorded entirely in her father's home studio, the album highlights her striking, deeply traditional vocal style and intricate fingerpicking, establishing her within the mid-2000s freak-folk movement.
