Baselines
by Bill Laswell
Acting as his official solo debut, the prolific producer and bassist assembled an eclectic all-star roster of the downtown New York avant-garde for this wildly unpredictable session. 'Baselines' violently collides blistering funk basslines with dissonant free jazz improvisation, dub techniques, and frantic hip-hop turntablism. The fiercely experimental, groove-oriented record perfectly encapsulated the genre-obliterating ethos of the early 1980s No Wave and mutant disco scenes.
