Written heavily in the aftermath of frontman Matt Shultz's divorce and the death of several close friends, the Kentucky rock band pivots into synth-heavy, dance-oriented post-punk. The record balances massive, radio-ready alternative rock hooks with surprisingly dark, deeply confessional lyricism regarding depression and the isolation of touring. It successfully earned the band their second Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
