On his 1967 debut LP 'Guitarra Portuguesa', Carlos Paredes uses the Coimbra fado tradition as a launchpad for his own rigorous and deeply personal compositions, redefining the instrument's role as a solo voice. His virtuosic playing combines baroque formalism with folk melodies, shifting between rapid, metallic passages and warmly resonant, lyrical phrasing, all while accompanied by Fernando Alvim on classical guitar.
