Guitarra portuguesa
by Carlos Paredes
On his 1967 debut LP 'Guitarra Portuguesa', Carlos Paredes uses the Coimbra fado tradition as a launchpad for his own rigorous and deeply personal compositions, redefining the instrument's role as a solo voice. His virtuosic playing combines baroque formalism with folk melodies, shifting between rapid, metallic passages and warmly resonant, lyrical phrasing, all while accompanied by Fernando Alvim on classical guitar. The album established a new, more abstract vocabulary for the instrument, balancing intense emotion with a poetically expressive intellect that cemented Paredes' status as a master innovator.
