Widely considered by Costello himself to be his weakest effort, 'Goodbye Cruel World' is characterized by the slick, overproduced synthesisers characteristic of the era. Despite the cluttered Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley production, strong songwriting remains evident beneath the glossy veneer on tracks like 'The Only Flame in Town'. The grueling recording process and resulting burnout led Costello to drastically rethink his musical direction for subsequent projects.
