Transangelic Exodus
by Ezra Furman
Operating as a deeply anxious, cinematic concept album, the project follows a queer narrator fleeing an oppressive government alongside a partner who is mutating into an angel. The record frantically blends 1950s doo-wop and rock-and-roll sensibilities with harsh, lo-fi noise-pop and deeply theatrical, strained vocal performances. It was highly praised as a breathtakingly original, queer-focused narrative deeply reflective of contemporary political dread.
