Crack-Up
by Fleet Foxes
Marking the band's return from a six-year hiatus, 'Crack-Up' is a stylistically ambitious work of progressive folk that largely eschews conventional song structures in favor of sprawling, multi-part suites with abrupt shifts in tempo and dynamics. [1, 10] The album, co-produced by frontman Robin Pecknold, features dense and intricate arrangements that weave the group's signature vocal harmonies into complex instrumental layers, field recordings, and dissonant textures. [3, 5] Drawing its title and thematic inspiration from an F. Scott Fitzgerald essay, the record explores concepts of interpersonal and internal conflict with a newfound lyrical abstraction that departs from the more direct narrative style of their earlier releases.
