Ones & Twos

by Gerald Clayton

Ones & Twos cover art

On 'Ones & Twos', Gerald Clayton explores a conceptual framework inspired by the art of turntablism, with compositions on the album's A-side designed to be played simultaneously with their counterparts on the B-side. The resulting sound is a seamless blend of modal post-bop, neo-soul, chamber jazz, and Afro-Latin sounds, creating an effect that is both action-packed and dreamlike. The arrangements feature a bass-less sextet with prominent roles for Joel Ross on vibraphone and Elena Pinderhughes on flute, while post-production and percussion from Kassa Overall add textural layers and a hip-hop sensibility to the intricate ensemble performance.
