Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28
by Ground-Zero
On '革命京劇 (Revolutionary Pekinese Opera) Ver.1.28', Otomo Yoshihide's ensemble Ground-Zero creates a dense and chaotic sound collage built from samples of 1960s Chinese revolutionary operas, which had themselves been sampled in a prior work by Heiner Goebbels and Alfred 23 Harth. The album violently merges radical turntablism and plunderphonics with the frenetic energy of free improvisation, featuring a wild mix of noise guitar, saxophone, traditional Japanese instruments, and frenetic drumming. This cacophonous yet meticulously constructed work stands as a landmark of 1990s Japanese experimental music, critically re-examining cultural propaganda through a dizzying storm of sound.
