Wave Notation 1: Music for Nine Post Cards
by Hiroshi Yoshimura
Initially created for playback within Tokyo's Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, 'Wave Notation 1: Music for Nine Post Cards' is a foundational work of Japanese environmental music, or "kankyō ongaku". Home-recorded using a minimal setup of a Fender Rhodes electric piano and synthesizer, the album features serene, spacious compositions designed to integrate with the listener's surroundings. The work's tranquil, minimalist-inspired pieces helped pioneer the ambient genre in Japan and were given a wider release only after significant interest from museum visitors.
