Aviary
by Julia Holter
Inspired by a line from poet Etel Adnan, 'Aviary' is a sprawling 90-minute exploration of memory's chaotic nature, presented as a cacophonous enclosure of shrieking birds. [2, 4] The album's sound is dense and intentionally overwhelming, merging avant-garde sensibilities with baroque pop, free jazz, and medieval instrumentation like bagpipes and brass fanfares. [1, 3, 7] Holter's layered vocals navigate these challenging, stream-of-consciousness arrangements, which feature a wide sonic palette of synths, strings, and percussion, resulting in a critically acclaimed work lauded for its ambitious and uncompromising artistic vision.
