Recorded live within the Pura Paku Alaman palace, this album presents the court gamelan of Yogyakarta under the direction of the renowned master K.R.T. Wasitodiningrat. The performance captures the stately and refined character of the Central Javanese tradition, utilizing the court's historic heirloom gamelan with its distinct sléndro and pélog tunings. Released as part of the influential Nonesuch Explorer Series, this on-location recording by ethnomusicologist Robert E. Brown became a landmark release for Western audiences, with its track 'Ketawang Puspawarna' later selected for inclusion on the Voyager Golden Record.
