On the Corner

by Miles Davis

On the Corner cover art

'On the Corner' fuses the dense funk rhythms of Sly Stone and James Brown with the experimental tape-editing concepts of composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Anchored by churning, repetitive bass and drum grooves, the album's compositions were constructed by producer Teo Macero and Davis, who spliced hours of studio jams into a collage of collective rhythmic texture that prioritized the group sound over individual solos. Initially scorned by jazz critics and a commercial failure, the album was later reappraised as a landmark recording that anticipated the loop-based structures and studio-as-instrument approach of funk, post-punk, hip-hop, and electronic music.
