Tonight's the Night
by Neil Young
A direct and harrowing expression of grief, 'Tonight's the Night' was recorded in the wake of the heroin overdose deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry. The album's sound is intentionally raw and underproduced, capturing the bleary, late-night tequila-fueled sessions with the Santa Monica Flyers, which featured a ragged blend of country, blues, and rock defined by shaky vocals and loose, first-take performances. As the final part of Young's influential 'Ditch Trilogy', the album stands as a stark repudiation of the commercial polish of 'Harvest' and a landmark of unvarnished, emotionally cathartic songwriting.
