The Rose of England

The Rose of England cover art

Returning to top form after a series of uneven solo releases, the revered British pub-rock veteran delivered a sharp, roots-oriented pop masterclass. 'The Rose of England' largely abandons the synthetic new wave trends of the era, opting instead for organic, highly melodic country-rock structures and jangly guitars. The record is notably highlighted by 'I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock and Roll)', an infectious, energetic re-recording of a song he had previously penned for Dave Edmunds.
