Danny Elfman's increasingly prolific film-scoring career began to heavily inform the sprawling, cinematic arrangements of the eclectic rock group's seventh studio album. The noticeably darker, melancholic tone of the songwriting marked a clear departure from their hyperactive ska-influenced origins.
