Though credited to bassist/cellist Ron Carter for his debut as a leader, this New Jazz session is equally defined by the presence of Eric Dolphy and pianist Mal Waldron. Carter's pioneering use of the cello in a post-bop setting provides a uniquely woody, chamber-like texture to the album's complex, angular improvisations.
