Canto Ostinato
by Simeon ten Holt / Erik Hall
As the second installment in a trilogy of minimalist reinterpretations, Erik Hall's 'Canto Ostinato' reimagines Simeon ten Holt's 1979 composition, which was originally scored for four pianos. Hall performs the piece solo, multitracking vintage keyboards including a grand piano, a Rhodes electric piano, and a Hammond organ to create a warm, intimate, and tangible soundscape. The performance respects the source material's meditative, repetitive structure while imbuing it with a distinctly personal and organic quality, manually playing each layer without loops or quantization.
