Pornography

Pornography cover art

Marking the desolate conclusion of the band's early 'gloom trilogy', 'Pornography' is defined by a suffocatingly dense and abrasive wall of sound crafted with producer Phil Thornalley. The album's sonic hostility, built upon relentless drum machines, churning basslines, and tortured vocals, gives form to its lyrical themes of nihilism and despair, which were heavily influenced by intra-band conflict, substance abuse, and frontman Robert Smith's depression. Though initially met with poor critical reception, the album became a commercial success in the UK and is now widely regarded as a harrowing, foundational text of the gothic rock genre.
