Ellis outfitted his big band with a custom quarter-tone trumpet and directed them to play in bizarre time signatures like 7/4 and 19/4. Despite the extreme technical difficulty, the brass arrangements remain fiercely driving and accessible, injecting a rock-like intensity into the traditional jazz orchestra format.
