Happy Sad
by Tim Buckley
Marking a pivotal turn toward experimentation, 'Happy Sad' immerses the listener in a spacious, jazz-inflected soundscape defined by David Friedman's vibraphone and elongated, meditative song structures. This was the first album for which Buckley wrote all his own lyrics, shifting to a more personal and introspective style while beginning to use his voice as an improvisational instrument. Produced by Zal Yanovsky and Jerry Yester, the record became Buckley's highest-charting album, yet its avant-garde folk-jazz direction also initiated a departure from mainstream appeal that would define his subsequent career.
