Kogun
by Toshiko Akiyoshi
The 1974 debut album 'Kogun' established the Toshiko Akiyoshi–Lew Tabackin Big Band as a vital new force in jazz, moving beyond nostalgia with complex, original compositions. Akiyoshi's arrangements uniquely fuse the textures of a modern big band with melodic and structural elements from traditional Japanese music, notably on the programmatic title track which incorporates music from Noh theater. The album serves as a dynamic vehicle for co-leader Lew Tabackin's versatile improvisations on both tenor saxophone and flute, setting the stage for the band's distinctive, cross-cultural sound.
