Mathematical Mother

On 'Mathematical Mother', the Italian ensemble Universal Totem Orchestra presents a complex and eclectic form of progressive rock, blending elements of Zeuhl, symphonic rock, jazz fusion, and avant-garde music. The album is characterized by intricate compositions with shifting time signatures, a dynamic rhythm section, and the classically-trained, operatic soprano vocals of Ana Torres Fraile, which are often used as an instrument alongside male choirs and passages of Italian lyrics. This dense musical framework, featuring prominent saxophone, keyboards, and marvelously played bass, serves a conceptual narrative inspired by the collective of French mathematicians known as Nicolas Bourbaki.
