Written entirely while frontman Mike Scheidt was recovering from a near-fatal intestinal disease, the eighth album from the Oregon trio is a staggeringly emotional triumph of doom metal. The crushing, monolithic riffs are frequently broken up by deeply fragile acoustic passages and highly soaring, vulnerable clean vocal performances. It was universally heralded as a profoundly beautiful, spiritual meditation on mortality and survival.
