Abdullah Ibrahim

Abdullah Ibrahim

Abdullah Ibrahim is a South African pianist and composer who shaped the identity of Cape Jazz. Initially known as Dollar Brand, he developed a distinct musical vocabulary by merging traditional African songs, Christian hymns, and the modern jazz of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. His work often carries a spiritual weight and addresses political realities, most notably with the composition "Mannenberg," which became an unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement. Through a synthesis of diverse influences, from local marabi music to global jazz forms, Ibrahim established a sound that is both deeply rooted in his homeland and internationally resonant.
