Aston "Family Man" Barrett

As the bassist and musical director for Bob Marley & The Wailers, Aston "Family Man" Barrett was a principal architect of the reggae sound. [8, 9] His spacious, melodic basslines, conceived as baritone vocal phrases, established the genre's rhythmic backbone and gave the bass a primary melodic role. [14, 15, 16] With his brother Carlton on drums, he formed a foundational rhythm section, first in Lee "Scratch" Perry's Upsetters and then as the anchor of the Wailers, where his arrangements shaped their definitive international albums. [8] Barrett's innovative approach codified the bass's function in reggae, influencing generations of musicians across numerous genres. [9, 15]
