Bill Barber

Bill Barber

John William Barber was an American tubist who redefined the role of his instrument in modern jazz. [1, 3] A Juilliard-trained musician, he first gained notice in Claude Thornhill's orchestra before becoming a founding member of the Miles Davis Nonet. [1] His work on the seminal 'Birth of the Cool' sessions, and subsequent recordings with Gil Evans and John Coltrane, moved the tuba from a rhythm-section anchor to a lyrical, melodic voice capable of intricate passages. [1, 4, 5, 7] Barber's pioneering approach integrated the tuba's tonal color into the cool jazz palette, influencing generations of brass players. [5, 6, 7]
