Chico Buarque

Chico Buarque (born 1944 in Rio de Janeiro) is one of Brazil’s most celebrated songwriters, novelists, and playwrights. Emerging in the 1960s alongside artists like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, he became known for his poetic lyrics and sophisticated melodies rooted in samba and bossa nova traditions. During Brazil’s military dictatorship, his songs often carried subtle political criticism, leading to censorship and exile in Italy. Beyond music, Buarque is an acclaimed novelist, winning the Camões Prize in 2019. His work blends romance, social commentary, and lyrical craftsmanship, making him a central figure in Brazilian culture.
