Coil

Formed in London by John Balance in 1982 and solidified with the addition of Peter Christopherson, Coil functioned as a primary vessel for post-industrial and experimental music for over two decades. The group’s output was characterized by constant stylistic evolution, merging industrial noise, ambient electronics, acid house, and folk traditions with esoteric and occult philosophies. They approached composition as a ritualistic practice, employing unconventional methods to create soundscapes that shifted from early abrasive works to later, more ethereal material. The project concluded following Balance's death in 2004, leaving a significant legacy that shaped the trajectory of dark ambient and experimental sound.
