D'Angelo

D'Angelo

Born Michael Eugene Archer, D'Angelo was a principal architect of the neo-soul movement that redefined R&B in the mid-1990s. [1] A multi-instrumentalist and producer, he merged the textures of classic soul, funk, and gospel with the rhythmic sensibilities of hip-hop. [7, 10, 15] His debut, *Brown Sugar* (1995), established this hybrid sound, but it was the intricately layered and sonically ambitious *Voodoo* (2000) that solidified his influential status. [8] Following a prolonged public absence, he released the politically charged *Black Messiah* (2014). [4] Archer's work is defined by its complex vocal arrangements, harmonic sophistication, and a persistent focus on groove, shaping a generation of artists. [16]
