Dewey Redman

An American tenor saxophonist, Walter Dewey Redman was a pivotal voice who bridged the raw emotionalism of Texas blues with the harmonic frontiers of the avant-garde. His muscular, vocalized tone and willingness to play outside conventional tonality defined his contributions to the foundational free jazz ensembles of his high school classmate *Ornette Coleman* from 1968 to 1972. Concurrently, he was an essential member of *Keith Jarrett's* influential American Quartet and a co-founder of the collective Old and New Dreams, which explored *Coleman's* legacy. Redman's solo work on labels like #Impulse!# and #Black Saint#, including the album 'The Ear of the Behearer', solidified his versatile and exploratory approach.
