Earl "Chinna" Smith

Earl "Chinna" Smith is a foundational Jamaican guitarist whose work shaped the architecture of reggae. As a core member of The Soul Syndicate and a session player for Bunny Lee's Aggrovators, he appeared on over 500 albums, defining the sound for artists like Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Augustus Pablo. [1, 2, 16] Smith’s innovative style merged taut, rhythmic skanks with fluid lead lines, establishing a gold standard for the genre. [16, 18] Later in his career, he founded the High Times record label and initiated the Inna De Yard project, an acoustic series that re-centered reggae on its raw, spiritual origins and affirmed his legacy as a primary architect and elder statesman of the music.
