Fred Smith

Fred Smith was an American bassist celebrated for his foundational role in the New York rock scene. After a brief, early stint in the band that would become *Blondie*, he joined Television in 1975, replacing *Richard Hell*. Smith's melodic, steady, and understated bass playing became the crucial anchor for the ambitious guitar interplay of *Tom Verlaine* and *Richard Lloyd*. His work was integral to the band's landmark albums, including the highly influential 1977 debut 'Marquee Moon' and its follow-up, 'Adventure'. His disciplined style provided the structural foundation that defined Television's sound and influenced countless post-punk and alternative rock musicians.
