Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan was a principal architect of cool jazz, celebrated for his mastery of the baritone saxophone, which he played with a surprisingly light and agile tone. He was also a significant composer and arranger, contributing pivotal work to the *Miles Davis* Nonet's 'Birth of the Cool' sessions. Mulligan's most famous ensemble was his groundbreaking early 1950s pianoless quartet with trumpeter *Chet Baker*, a format that highlighted their intricate contrapuntal interplay and became a hallmark of the West Coast jazz sound. Throughout his career, he formed various influential groups, including his acclaimed Concert Jazz Band, and collaborated with jazz titans like *Paul Desmond* and *Thelonious Monk*.
