Henry Cow

Henry Cow

Formed at Cambridge University in 1968, Henry Cow was an English ensemble that systematically deconstructed rock music's conventions. The group merged avant-garde composition, influenced by modern classical music, with collective free improvisation and a firm anti-commercial stance. [2, 6, 9, 11] Their sound was defined by complex, scored pieces, unconventional time signatures, and a volatile instrumental attack. [6, 11] An openly political and philosophically driven collective, the band's most enduring legacy was initiating the Rock in Opposition (RIO) movement in 1978, uniting stylistically diverse European bands against the music industry and creating a framework for experimental music that continues to resonate.
