Horace Silver

As a primary architect of the hard bop style, pianist and composer Horace Silver shaped the sound of modern jazz in the 1950s and '60s. His compositions merged blues, gospel, and Cape Verdean folk music with a sophisticated harmonic sense and infectious rhythmic drive. After co-founding the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey, he formed his own influential quintet, a definitive vehicle for his percussive piano style and tightly arranged compositions. Silver's work established a new standard for the small group format and his accessible, melody-focused writing produced many enduring jazz standards, defining a populist but innovative approach.
