Horace Tapscott

Horace Tapscott was a visionary pianist, composer, and community leader who became a cornerstone of the Los Angeles avant-garde jazz scene. After playing trombone with artists like *Lionel Hampton*, he focused on the piano, developing a percussive and distinctive style. In 1961, he founded the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, a community-focused ensemble dedicated to preserving and developing Black musical traditions. His work, often released on independent labels like #Nimbus West# and #Flying Dutchman#, fused spiritual jazz, blues, and experimental sounds. Key recordings like 'The Giant Is Awakened' and 'The Call' showcase his commitment to music as a tool for social and cultural empowerment.
