Hugh Masekela

Hugh Masekela was a world-renowned South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, and singer celebrated as "the father of South African jazz." His vibrant Afro-Jazz sound blended mbaqanga with jazz and funk, creating a unique musical voice. Masekela scored a massive international hit in 1968 with his instrumental 'Grazing in the Grass'. A fierce opponent of apartheid, his music often carried a political message, with anthems like 'Soweto Blues' and 'Bring Him Back Home' becoming symbols of the struggle for freedom. He collaborated with a vast range of artists, including *Miriam Makeba*, *Paul Simon*, and *Fela Kuti*, and founded his own label, #Chisa Records#, during his 30-year exile.
