Ian McDonald

Ian McDonald

Ian McDonald was an English multi-instrumentalist and a primary architect of progressive rock. As a founding member of King Crimson, his application of Mellotron, reeds, and woodwinds was fundamental to the expansive sound of their 1969 debut, shaping the genre's texture and scope. He later co-founded the hard rock act Foreigner, adapting his multi-instrumental abilities to a commercially potent framework, contributing guitar, keyboards, and horns to their first three albums. McDonald's work demonstrates a rare stylistic duality, bridging experimental rock with arena-level success and defining pivotal moments in two distinct rock idioms.
