Joe Arnold

An American tenor saxophonist, Joe Arnold was a crucial architect of the Memphis soul sound during its zenith in the 1960s. [3] Emerging around 1965, he became a vital sideman within the Stax Records studio system, where his saxophone work anchored seminal recordings by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Wilson Pickett. [3, 5] As a member of the Mar-Keys horn section, he contributed to the powerful energy that defined the Stax/Volt revue and its influential European tour. [10] Though he recorded some material under his own name, Arnold's primary legacy is his foundational role in shaping the texture of classic soul music through numerous widely-heard performances. [5]
