Joe Sample

A principal architect of the modern jazz-funk sound, Joseph Leslie Sample was a pianist and composer who shaped a distinct keyboard style rooted in the blues, gospel, and jazz traditions of his native Houston. [1, 8] As a founding member of The (Jazz) Crusaders, he guided the group's evolution from hard bop to a pioneering electric fusion, becoming a key popularizer of the Fender Rhodes piano. [1, 7, 9] His concurrent solo career and prolific work as a studio musician yielded compositions that became staples of contemporary jazz, while his distinctive grooves were later adopted by hip-hop producers, extending his influence across generations.
