Larry Carlton

Larry Carlton

Larry Carlton is an American guitarist whose fluid phrasing and signature warm tone, produced by his eponymous 1969 Gibson ES-335, defined a new standard for session players. [1, 2] Emerging in the 1970s, he became one of the era's most in-demand studio musicians, contributing to hundreds of albums across jazz, rock, and pop for artists like Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. [2, 6] His foundational work with the jazz-funk outfit The Crusaders and later the smooth jazz group Fourplay complemented a successful solo career. [18, 19] Carlton's synthesis of blues-inflected jazz harmony and melodic precision shaped the sound of countless records, establishing his legacy as a consummate guitarist's guitarist. [1]
