Larry Willis

A pianist and composer of remarkable breadth, Larry Willis emerged from Harlem, New York, making his recording debut in 1965 with saxophonist Jackie McLean. [1, 2] His career was defined by a fluid movement across genres, shaping post-bop and Afro-Cuban jazz with the Fort Apache Band while also exploring jazz-rock fusion during a seven-year tenure with Blood, Sweat & Tears. [1, 7, 19] A prolific artist, he recorded on over 300 albums as a valued sideman for figures like Woody Shaw and Roy Hargrove, alongside a significant catalog as a bandleader.
