Mahmoud Ahmed

Mahmoud Ahmed is a legendary Ethiopian singer and one of the most significant figures in the nation's musical history. Rising from humble beginnings as a handyman at the Arizona Club, he seized an opportunity to sing with the Imperial Body Guard Band in 1962, launching a career that defined the “Golden Era” of Ethiopian music. His distinctive, soulful voice blends traditional Amharic melodies with jazz, funk, and soul. His 1970s recordings for the #Amha# and #Kaifa# labels, especially the album 'Ere Mela Mela', became foundational texts of Ethio-jazz. International recognition surged in the late 1990s with the #Buda Musique# 'Éthiopiques' series, which introduced his pioneering sound to a global audience.
