Os Mutantes

Formed in São Paulo in 1966, Os Mutantes emerged as pivotal figures in Brazil’s Tropicália movement. [2, 7] The group—founded by Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee, and Sérgio Dias—engineered a revolutionary sound by fusing Anglo-American psychedelic rock with Brazilian rhythms and avant-garde aesthetics. [1, 5, 12] Their work was defined by sonic experimentalism, employing studio manipulation, distortion, and custom-built instruments to create a unique and irreverent musical language. [1, 6, 12] Transitioning from collaborators with artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso to a progressive rock entity, their influence persisted long after their initial dissolution, cementing their legacy as pioneers who radically expanded the vocabulary of Brazilian and international rock music.
