Philip Cohran

Philip Cohran

Philip Cohran was a trumpeter, composer, and a foundational figure in Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). After his time in *Sun Ra's* Arkestra, Cohran became a community leader and musical innovator, inventing the Frankiphone, an electrified kalimba. His Artistic Heritage Ensemble, which included future members of *Earth, Wind & Fire*, created a unique blend of spiritual jazz, African rhythms, and soulful melodies on albums like 'On the Beach'. His work, often released on his own #Zulu# label, was a cornerstone of the 'Great Black Music' movement and influenced generations, including his sons who form the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
