R.E.M.

R.E.M.

Formed in Athens, Georgia, R.E.M. was a foundational force in the development of American alternative rock. The band established a signature sound defined by Peter Buck’s arpeggiated, jangling guitar work; Michael Stipe’s cryptic lyricism and distinct vocals; and the melodic, counter-rhythmic interplay of bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry. [5, 6] Emerging from the 1980s college rock scene, the group achieved international success while maintaining artistic integrity, influencing subsequent generations of musicians by proving the commercial viability of a sound rooted in post-punk and 60s folk-rock. [2, 13] Their trajectory from underground favorites to global stadium act set a blueprint for the alternative genre's mainstream ascension. [8]
