Richard Williams

A versatile and reliable trumpeter with a bright, sharp tone, Richard Williams was a valued sideman in a wide variety of settings from hard bop to the avant-garde. He is perhaps best known for his powerful contributions to large-ensemble masterpieces, including *Charles Mingus's* 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' and *Oliver Nelson's* 'The Blues and the Abstract Truth'. His ability to navigate complex arrangements and deliver fiery, effective solos made him a first-call player for many leaders. Though he only recorded one album as a leader, 1960's 'New Horn in Town' for #Candid Records#, his extensive work with artists like *Gigi Gryce*, *Yusef Lateef*, and the *Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra* cemented his legacy.
